    “…to a tale that has become Disney-fied and de-sexed.”

I can’t argue with the first part about being Disney-fied, but having read the original Alice…de-sexed? And I’m one who usually catches the sexual references, or makes them up myself. Still, nice to get some ink.

i guess referring to charles dodgson’s friendship with little girls? - which has been whitewashed from the tim burton version (…i’ve still not seen the film actually)

Japanese interpreters of Alice rarely forget Dodgeson’s close relationships with little girls and that he took quite daring photos of them (by today’s Western neurotic standards). In the same way, Westerners like to play with the allegedly “druggy” aspects of Alice. Of course, there’s no evidence that Dodgeson himself was a Junky or a pedo (unless you count the photos he took?), but they provide great raw material for artists. Haven’t seen the Burton version yet, but I’m not encouraged by it being on Disney. I recommend Gavin Miller’s 1985 movie Dreamchild (with great screenplay by Dennis Potter) which has some impressive sinister elements and sexual tension between Dodgeson and the young Alice.
